Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  One of the ways that I celebrate this great man is by teaching my class as much as I can about him and how he lived.  For this unit of study, the kiddos have read stories, created art, developed a timeline, learned important vocabulary words, and wrapped it up with a letter.  This is always one of my highlights of the year.  Below is a sample of some of the letters.

Dear Dr. King,

Thank you Dr. King.  It is because of you children can play together and eat lunch together.  I have a dream.  My dream is that children will not hurt anybody with their words and not use violence.  I hope they will use kind words.

From,

S.  age 6

Dear Dr. King,

Were you sad you could not play with your friends?  I know you did not like the unfair laws.  I did not like the unfair laws too!  But it ended because of you.

Your friend,

C. age 6

Dear Dr. King,

Thank you Martin Luther King Jr. for ending segregation!  I am so sorry you got shot.  Thank you for changing the unfair laws.  I wish that you were here because your dream came true.

Sincerely,

L. age 7

Dear Dr. King,

I am glad you won the Nobel Peace Prize.  Thank you for changing the unfair laws like segregation and the bus boycott.  I like a lot of things like you … doing sports and working hard in school.

Love,

B. age 7

Dear Dr. King,

Thank you for changing the laws of segregation.  Now I can play with my best friend who is black.  I heard you were put in jail many times.  I also heard you were a good reader … so am I.  I am sad you were shot.

Love,

T. age 7

Dear Dr. King,

I like that you changed the laws of segregation.  It is good that everyone is equal.  I like to listen to songs about you in school.  At my school I am learning so much about you.

Your good friend,

M.  age 6

Dear Dr. King,

I think the guy who shot you was put in jail.  I hope you are happy up in heaven.  That guy who shot you did not truly believe in love.

Thank you,

E. age 6

Dear Dr. King,

Thank you Dr. King for making our country a better place.  I am glad you won the Nobel Peace Prize.  I am sad a man shot you.  Who is up in heaven?  Is John F Kennedy up there?  I love to read chapter books.  I love celebrating your birthday!

Truly,

R. age 6

Dear Dr. King,

Thank you for changing all of those unfair laws.  I am so happy that you won the Nobel Peace Prize.  It must have broken your heart when you could not play with your friends.

Your friend,

G.  age 6

Dear Dr. King,

Thank you MLK for changing the laws.  If you were still here I would have a question for you.  Why did you give up the money from the Nobel Peace Prize?  I feel sad that the man that shot you did not believe in love.  It is a good thing that the bad guy got put in jail.  I wonder how long the man had to stay in jail?  I never knew that you became a pastor like your dad.  I like that you told speeches.

Thank you,

K.  age 7

Dear Dr. King,

Thank you so so so much for helping to end segregation.  I’m so sorry that you got shot.  That made me cry.  I’m glad for all of the good stuff you did.  I love you so so so much!

Your friend,

E. age 6

Leave the kiddos some love!

Enjoy the weekend!

P.S.  My new lens, 100mm 2.8 macro,  just arrived today and I took a couple minutes to try it out.  I love the colors and texture found in a classroom!  Can’t wait to try it out with the next newborn … just think of all those yummy details … rolls, lips, ears, fingers, toes.  Swoon!!!
