san diego lifestyle photographer | what a day at the fair looks like | june 2012

I’ve been lucky to have met so many incredibly talented and wonderful photographers during this journey.  People who share the same desire to capture their own families in a real and beautiful way.  I’m teaming up with twelve of these women on a very personal and meaningful project called, “What ________ Looks Like.”

Our goal is to capture our own families in a real and beautiful way.  Some people call it “lifestyle”, some call it “real life”, some call it “unposed”.  No matter what you call it, our desire is to snatch the moments that represent the relationships, the dynamics, the reality, the beauty, the truth, and the life of our families and record them here on our blogs as well as in print at the end of the project.

Each month we will each choose to fill in the blank with our word of choice.  Some of us may choose to use the same word all year and some may choose to change it up each month.  We will each link to the next photographer until our circle is complete.

We hope this project inspires you to take more pictures of your own families so that those unique moments that make your family unique will never be lost or forgotten.Wendy VonSosen.

Each of us will put our own spin on this project, making it more meaningful to us.  I wanted my monthly post to be in the form of a letter to Brooks.  When the year is complete, I hope to compile the monthly letters and images into a book.  My gift to him and to myself.  Here is our story of June 2012.

Dear Brooksie,

Awww … lazy mornings, running, working out, farmer’s market, swimming, afternoons with friends, watching the Olympic trials at night … that’s what summer means to us.  Summer also means our trip to the San Diego County Fair.  We had so much fun again this year!  We always go on one of the days that they sell the wrist bands for the rides, which means you can ride all the rides you want that day, over and over and over.  I don’t think you could even pick a favorite ride … you love them all!  Thanks so much for being the best fair buddy around.

You’ve been eyeing this bungee ride ever since we’ve been coming to the fair.  When it shoots up it makes you totally squeal with excitement!  However, there is no way you will ever find me on this ride and the only way you’ll get on it is when you’re a teenager coming with your friends.  I was bummed that when we rounded the corner it was at rest and not zooming to the top.

The bunny behind this one was seriously one of the biggest we have ever seen.  Both of us were amazed at the size of it!

This is always a silly tradition for you.  We only do it at the fair and it so funny for you up to feel the vibrations on your feet.

This set makes me crack up.  The little roller coaster was your first ride of the day and you lucked out for the front seat.  During the ENTIRE ride, the little boys behind you screamed at the top of their lungs and the boy in the 3rd seat cried the entire time.  You kept turning around to see what in the heck was going on and then just laughed.

It’s a short letter tonight since we just picked up MomMom from the train station … I’ll come back to this later in the week and add a bit more.

Love you Tiger!  😉

san diego family photographer | just us twelve times | june 2012

For the past four year our favorite way to kickstart our summer is a trip to the San Diego County Fair.  We stop by the goats, cows, and pigs first … then head straight out to the ‘kiddie zone’.  This year we missed our fair friends who were living it up in Hawaii, but we still managed to have a great time!  I passed off my camera to 3 different people and this is the only one that turned out … the others were WAY out of focus.  Hope you are enjoying summer as much as we are!

If you’ve been keeping up with my resolution for 2012, you know all about the changes we have made to our life … nearly all organic, no processed foods with more than 5 ingredients, chemical and toxin free home (thanks to Melaleuca), and this month (finally), I added working out back into my life.  I spent my whole life as an athlete, all the way up until when Brooks was born.  I’ve been disappointed that he doesn’t consider me someone who is athletic … disappointed in myself.  Summer was the perfect time to get re-started and re-charged.  Brooks has been the best workout partner … very persistent and determined.  We are running 3 days a week and working out to ‘Jillian Michaels Body Revolution’ 4 days a week.  Brooks is in love with the Jillian workouts … he loves to show off his ‘guns’ (which are quite impressive for a 7 year old).  😉

Now head on over to see what Misty Setzler, Lubbock Family Photographer did this month with her family.

July 11, 2012 - 12:22 am

Krista keller - Jules I realize I don’t know you super well but what I respect you for and admire you for are your commitments in your life and that you and Brooks are a total team. I can hear it in your writings and see it in your pictures.. What a blessed journey you are on. And all your talk about organics and going clean is starting to affect me. I bought a juicer and I passed at the funnel cakes at our fair- which took all of my strength. I still feel regret over it … ;(. Great post this week!

san diego beach photographer | the stanley family

I had the pleasure to meet up with one of my favorite families at the beach for this mini session.  We were blessed with another gorgeous San Diego evening with beautiful light.  Little C is one of Brooks’ favorite friends.  When I watch the two of them together, I have visions of them in 10 years, hanging out and still the best of friends.  And sweet P … look at those eyes and those beautiful curls.  She is truly one of a kind!  Thank you K and R for your friendship!  We LOVE you all!!!

I will be opening up the books for fall/holiday sessions in early July.  Mini session dates will be available for the beach and the field.  Please keep your eye on the blog for updates… I only do a limited amount of sessions and often book up early.

Sam and I have been online friends for a couple years and when she contacted me for a family session when they were visiting San Diego, I was thrilled!  Of course she knew just how to dress her darling family for photos.  Her girls were so much fun and easy to photograph.  Thank you Sam for trusting me with your session.  I hope you come back with baby number 3!  🙂
