We ended up with four images of us together this month.  The first two are from Halloween day … our school parade and just before we were off to trick or treat!

Optimus Prime and the Garden Fairy …

And these next two are the before and after shots at the Color Run last weekend.  We had a blast!!

You can see more fun from the San Diego 5k Color Run on this post.

Sorry that the four of these aren’t much for creative posing, but I was just looking to grab a quick shot.  🙂

Please continue on through the circle with Suzanne Carey.

san diego child photographer | what choosing joy looks like | october 2012

I wasn’t too sure I’d participate in the circle this month because I didn’t think I had a creative set of images to share.  When I opened the files, I decided I’d go ahead and post what I had because these will still be important to the one who matters the most … Brooks.  These are still the memories I want him to remember and think back on with fond memories.  This month I decided to choose joy, inspired by Ashley of lilbooblue who also battled cancer.  I bought a beautiful necklace and some wristbands to share from Ashley’s shop  … both with the phrase … choose joy.  This has helped to reshape my days with a positive attitude.

Dear Brooks,

Each day you teach me so much.  You are the reason I choose to live with grace and joy.  You are the one who brings smile and laughter into every day.   Thank you!

I just have one quick snap of your second grade performance with Mr. Lee.  You and  your classmates did a great job singing!

Every chance you get, before and after soccer, you love to shoot a few hoops.  It always cracks me up to see your ‘style’ as you shoot!  You are starting basketball this week and I hope you continue to love it and hopefully you still love the game.

You did a great job representing your team as team captain.  The season wraps up this next weekend and I couldn’t be more proud of you and your team.  Pretty impressive to finish your first season together as the runner up of your division.  You play with such a fierce passion!  Your speed and endurance is nearly unbeatable in defense.  Great job!

You always set such a good example of choosing joy.  Whenever I see you with your friends, you are all so happy.  I have no idea what you all are always laughing at and maybe I don’t want to know, but I love seeing you so happy.  Here you are with your buddies, just before the school Halloween parade.

And a few from your class party.

We couldn’t let the day end without a few pics with you and your best buddies.

After school, we went straight to our traditional Halloween party at Ms. Veronika’s house.  We’ve celebrated Halloween with this crew every year … love our friends!

To continue on with our busy week, we celebrated your 8th birthday with dinner out with your friends.  You three are SILLY!  So so SILLY!  You shared the Gangnam style video with them during dinner then the three of you decided to put on your own dance show … right in front of all the people at the Commons.  It was hysterical!

Your birthday weekend was wrapped up with the Color Run 5K.  Of course we were the early birds so we had great parking and had a chance to walk around and meet up with people before the run.  When we ended up on the front line of the start line, you decided that you wanted to run this on your own … I was just too slow for you.  At the start of the event, you were off like a shot!  You totally left me in the dust.  It was fun to cheer you on at the turn around point.  I cut out part of the race so I could run to the car and grab my camera to catch you come across the finish line.  You ended up being the 11th finisher overall.   It was an awesome experience to share with you!

Before …. (you thought it was so funny that I was wearing a tutu to run in … I agree, but when else do you get to wear a tutu … it was a first for me).

After …

Thanks for bringing so much joy into my life!

Love you!!

Mommy

san diego family photographer | just us twelve times | october 2012

It’s been exactly one month today, since my diagnosis with stage 3 follicular lymphoma.  As you can imagine it’s totally rocked my world.  Discovering I’ve got cancer has been the biggest heartbreak I’ve ever experienced , but along with that heartbreak has come immeasurable gifts of love, friendship, humility, forgiveness and prayer.  If you can believe it, I am so incredibly at peace and happy right now.  I have been blessed with the support and love of the photography community and my own local school community.  In addition to clean eating, I’ve started going to a yoga studio 4 days a week and a barre studio 2 days a week.  It’s amazing how much clarity you can walk away with after a yoga class.  I only wish I had started all of this so long ago.  I am so much more aware of what triggers my stress and I’m mindful to release it and avoid it.  Thankfully I’m feeling healthy still and I hope this practice of mind and body health will help me continue on for as long as possible.  I’m choosing to live in the present and  to find joy and grace in each day … and with that decision comes so much peace and happiness.

Thank you so much for all of your prayers!  It’s truly lifted me through some very hard days.  xoxo

On to today’s post … Brooks tagged along at a mini session with one of my favorite families last weekend, so I asked the sweet momma to snap a few of the two of us for today’s post.

amy grace - jules, so much about this whole entry makes such a deep impression. first of all…YOU are breathtaking. you are the kind of forty six we only see on movie stars. but there is a light coming from the inside of both of you. love and connection and hope shine from within. and i am worried for you. and tremendously HOPEFUL for you. keep walking through it, no matter what “it” is, how it changes. you have strength and grace that are striking. let the best people take care of you and just take care of him. i know this kind of worry. i carry it around with me too. just breathe, as beautifully as you have been doing. big love…

Jennifer Olivas Romeo and Mae - Jules,
I haven’t been on the Bloom forum in so long and just came across your FB yesterday. I’m so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. You’ve always been one of the photographers that have stood out to me. Your work is inspiring and your sweet spirit is quite obvious even through the internet. I prayed for you and your family yesterday and in church this morning and I will continue to do so. I am very hopeful that you will receive the miracle you need. Never give up! 🙂

san diego family photographer | what love looks like | august 2012

I’ve been lucky to have met so many incredibly talented and wonderful photographers during this journey.  People who share the same desire to capture their own families in a real and beautiful way.  I’m teaming up with twelve of these women on a very personal and meaningful project called, “What ________ Looks Like.”

Our goal is to capture our own families in a real and beautiful way.  Some people call it “lifestyle”, some call it “real life”, some call it “unposed”.  No matter what you call it, our desire is to snatch the moments that represent the relationships, the dynamics, the reality, the beauty, the truth, and the life of our families and record them here on our blogs as well as in print at the end of the project.

Each month we will each choose to fill in the blank with our word of choice.  Some of us may choose to use the same word all year and some may choose to change it up each month.  We will each link to the next photographer until our circle is complete.

We hope this project inspires you to take more pictures of your own families so that those unique moments that make your family unique will never be lost or forgotten.Wendy VonSosen.

Dear Brooks,

Three school days down … 177 days of second grade to go.  😉  It’s a good thing you LOVE your new teacher and your class.  I love watching your class walk by my class as you pass by my line, heading out to recess and lunch.  I know you’ll have a great year … you’re already off to an amazing start.  Your teacher even told me that she thought you’re an angel!  I think I love her a little bit more for that.

A couple weeks before school started we took off for one more vacation with your cousins and MomMom in Morro Bay.  A dear friend gave our family her house for the week … one that was just two doors down from the beach house we had for 12 years when I was growing up.  I was so excited to share with you and your cousins all of our favorite Central Coast beaches. Our first stop was Montana de Oro … you loved exploring the rocks and the cool dunes.  The only bummer of the day was the scorching hot sand burned our feet after just a short time sledding down the dunes.

We took a stroll through the main street of Morro Bay and enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Hofbrau.  After lunch we were on the hunt for salt water taffy … the first of many days looking for the perfect candy shop.

Next we were off to Cayucos beach.  Most of the store fronts had changed, but the beach side looked just like it did when I was a kid.

There were three of these pelicans that had made the pier their home.  They were super comfortable around people and this one thought you were OK until you reached out to pet it, then it gave you a gentle reminder … his beak around your head … and you decided to watch him from a distance.

You were mesmerized watching the big boys fish.  Poor Tanner had a bit of trouble with his line tangling … over and over.

Candy shop number two … lots more salt water taffy.

You and Sky are like siblings.  You share such a special bond … and best of all on this trip you didn’t bicker or fight the way siblings do.  The two of you were often found tucked away in a little spot talking, playing on the iPad, or playing a game.

Such a fun trip to San Luis Obispo for Thursday night Farmer’s market.  You’ve been here a few times, but not with the rest of the family.  Bubble Gum alley wasn’t exactly what you expected … you totally thought it was so gross.  I loved watching your face as you figured out what all that junk was covering the walls.  And finally, you ate the yummiest rib dinner from McClintocks.  Such a fun afternoon.

On Friday, we set off for Avila beach.  We had a gorgeous day filled with fishing, sand castle building, waves and sun.  It was perfect!  It was hysterical watching both Tanner and Carter fight off the sea lion trying to grab their fish.

On our last day, we took an early morning walk to look for sand dollars while the big boys went surfing.  Tanner and Carter didn’t last long in the freezing cold water with their lightweight wet suits, but the cold didn’t stop you and Sky from swimming with your clothes on.

You poor baby … on Saturday night around 10:00 you got sick and threw up every 30 minutes until 4:30 in the morning.  It was brutal for both of us.  You slept for about two days and you were back to normal.

While we were gone, our Grampy tree (given to us by dear sweet friends) was planted in a very special spot at Elings Park … right at the beginning of the Veteran’s Walk by a little bench.  MomMom will place a dedication plaque next to the tree with your name and your cousins’ names, in honor of Grampy.  We will visit this special spot every time we are in SB while walking the dogs.

Thanks for loving this special place as much as I always have.  You are already looking forward to a much longer visit next summer.

Keep up the great work at school!

Love you to the moon and back!
Mommy     xoxo
