Once upon a time …
This isn’t a new image, it’s one I took when Brooks began his reading life and I started my photography career. As a teacher, learning to read is so important and I know how challenging it can be for some children. It was hard for me, and I didn’t want Brooks to go through the same struggles that I did. When Brooks entered PEPP (pre-K), he knew all his sounds but he couldn’t name the letters (he went to a Montessori pre-school). All he cared about was playing, building, and rolling around (wrestling) on the carpet with his friends.
Once upon a time I was so worried about how school would go for him.
He had zero interest in learning anything which is why I placed him in a two year developmental kindergarten program. In California, the cut off date for incoming K’s is December 1st. With a late fall birthday, he was eligible to begin, but he would always be the youngest and he had no interest in school. I gave him one of the greatest gifts I could … the gift of time. He was given an extra year to explore and play while he was learning. He had so much fun, he didn’t even know he was learning the valuable skills that would help him be successful.
In this image, he was reading one of his first emergent reading books that he brought home each day. It helped to develop the confidence and skills needed at his pace. He’s been so blessed to have an amazing teacher each year. Now as a first grader, I get to take a peek at him through the common door to our rooms and see him with his face buried in a book or immersed in a discussion in his reading group. It makes my heart sing!! I couldn’t be more proud!
I realize that each child is unique, but if you are ever in a similar situation and have the ability to give the gift of time, I promise you would never regret the decision.

This month we adventured up the coast to San Juan Capistrano to meet up with Allison Jacobs and her son Gavin for today’s ‘just us’ images. We’ve been there once before for our train adventure to the petting zoo. It’s a gorgeous area with a beautiful mission, old shops, and unique buildings … it’s also PACKED with people and photographers on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. :)
We didn’t stay long, but managed to come home with two images for today!

If you followed my ‘fifty two on friday’ group, you might have seen on my final post that part of my goal for the 2012 was going to be to take better care of me. The first thing I did was run out and buy this awesome blender! Brooks and I now head to our new favorite market, Sprouts, filled with local and organic produce and food. By the end of the trip, our cart is PACKED with the yummiest fruits and veggies that we work together to pick out. My new breakfast of choice is a green monster smoothie … 4 kale leaves, a giant handful of spinach, 1 mini cucumber, 1 carrot, 1 piece of celery, 1/2 lime, a big slice of pineapple, and protein powder. It’s seriously sooo good! What I’m most proud of is after just 3 days my coffee no longer was appealing. So shocking to anyone who really knows me! I LOVED coffee … and I drank a LOT of it. Every. Single. Day. Now I’m a tea girl! I’ve been loving the TAZO teas that they sell at Starbucks. Not only have I kicked coffee, but also my once a day habit of a Diet Coke. Gone. Another shocking change is that I’ve lost all cravings for sugar! Sugar has been cut out of my diet for 3 weeks and I haven’t’ missed it once. The happiest change with all of this is the amazing increase in my energy … from the moment I wake up until I go to bed. It’s just crazy! This little blender changed so much for me in just one month. I’ll let you know how February goes! :)

So gorgeous Jules! I love the one with Brooks hugging you—so sweet. I loved reading about your trip to Sprouts…I won’t be giving up coffee anytime soon but the smoothie sounds inspiring!
gorgeous framing in both of these jules!!! that first is the sweetest…you know that love btw the pair of you just gives me goosebumps
i’m in love with my blendtec too. the energy increase is unbelievable. i can’t do more than 2 kale leaves though…ha!
I love theses images and your story behind it. I want a blendtec now…:)
wow- that first image is AWESOME! Love the crop and the framing! And I’m jealous of your energy and loss of sugar cravings. If I had time, I would totally do that cause I am in a permanent state of exhaustion over here! lol
These are so sweet…the brick one is my fave!!! Nice comp and sweet moment.
Oh Jules! That first shot stole my heart! I love everything about it!
Congrats on your healthier choices that awesome! You must try a tea from teavanna called blue berry bliss, so yummy!
Absolutely perfect Jules. I am in love with the black and white and I loved hearing about your smoothie adventures. Sounds like you and I have a similar relationship with coffee and diet coke. Definitely want to get more info from you on the smoothies!
It’s amazing the power of food isn’t it? It has the ability to super charge our engines or run them sub par on 2 cylinders. I am over the moon happy for you Jules, I’m a greenie too and I haven’t had one single headache in my 7 months of juicing. headaches for me were as common as your one a day diet coke hit. lol, so preach on sistah – I hear ya, I hear ya!
And these images are gorgeous! UNIQUE and beautiful!
Oh my gosh Jules, I LOVE that first picture!!!
I love the sweet expression on his face as he hugs his mama! And dude, if I could only get rid of my coffee and sugar addictions!
